Snakes: They're eating everything

Article: http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/in-florida-everglades-pythons-and-anacondas-dominate-food-chain/2012/01/30/gIQAULTVdQ_story.html

Overall, I believe this story about python and anaconda snakes devouring the entire food chain in the Everglades, is a great topic that most people would never know about if journalist didn't write about it. I love the lead because it relates back to everyone's childhood, no matter what age. I don't believe the first sentence of the third paragraph is a good statement however. The writer, Darryl Fears says "the snakes are literally..." By applying literally to the statement he is indicating his own opinion and not stating fact. If it was a fact, then it would not need literally.

The quote “There aren’t many native mammals that pythons can't choke down," is a great quote because it brings the reader in and sounds intense. Same thing with the quote beginning, "Pythons are wreaking havoc....."

Another great factor in this piece is the use of statistics to strengthen the article. All of the statistics are interesting and definitely contribute greatly to the piece as whole.

I had to look up a couple of words, like marauding. The article should be readable to everyone and should not require readers to look up words in doing so. But, some words were very good as well. Such as "perish"

Lastly, the ending "The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service predicted that a new generations of Burmese pythons on the edge of their non-native range can adapt and “expand to colder climates.”" doesn't really go with the whole general theme of the article. The article is about snakes destroying several species. It's not about snakes surviving in certain climates. I feel as if the writer was out of ideas of what to write about and therefore had to add on more information.

The article was good. It had it's positives and negatives, but the positives overcame the negative aspects of it.
