Remodeled in August, the Avon area
Stewart's Shop is booming with people preparing for the snow storm. Michelle
Monini, store manager, yells out, "Bread, milk, eggs. Stock up for the
storm." The floor is shining due to a recent waxing job by the shop
maintenance man and the maroon counters are wiped clean. Posters and homemade
advertisements line the tan walls. Pictures of eggs read, “Eggs are Cheeep Cheeep,”
and “So fresh you can still hear the chicken.” The newly designed counter tops
are filled from end to end with coffee, napkins, hotdogs, hard rolls, signs and more.
“Customers love Michelle’s crazy and ungrammatical
signs,” says Gregory Jones. Out front a large white rectangular box reads “One percent $2.79 Got Milk?.” Monini says it’s one of her latest creations,
a cardboard fridge she made up for the milk sale.
Snow is beginning to fall steadily
outside and customers our entering with snowflakes lining their jackets and
hair. A boy walks in sporting a recently cut Mohawk covered in snowflakes. He
wears a tie-dye t-shirt labeled SUNY Geneseo and faded jeans with no jacket. The
stores three brown rugs are soaking up lots of water, but it’s not enough as
the waxed floors begin to show signs of water, dirt and mud. After a while the
employees put up a Wet Floor sign to make sure customers don’t slip. The line
of people at the register remains steady. Harold Ferris, an 87-year-old man
walks in and says “Well I made it here another day. No snow is stopping me.”
Nice job, an A-, try for pictures with PEOPLE in them.
